Food Week 12.26-12.30

365 X 3. That’s more than 1,000 meals cooked in a year No wonder folks opt for fast food, restaurants and other ways to stay out of the kitchen. I feel their pain. But if you learn to embrace cooking, healthy cooking, it doesn’t have to hurt.

Do everything you can to get away from the “2 Week Repeat” cycle. The 2WR: your kitchen repertoire is 10 meals, with a couple of variations and an occasional mix and match. 2 days a week are Take Out. I didn’t include leftovers because a lot of folks won’t eat them. Then again, if it was one if your favorite meals or especially good, you might. More likely, you’ll take it for lunch the next day. You’re not in a food desert. You’re in a Food Rut.

Cooking can be fun and, if you work it right, not all that time consuming. Look for “30 minute” meals or instant and crockpot recipes but even cooking from scratch doesn’t have to take hours. Sure you can order the “prepackaged” boxes but I think there’s more fun in doing it yourself including the meal planning and shopping. That’s the other side of ”if you teach a person to fish”. It’s not just the eating, it’s also the fishing.

No New Years Resolution here, simply add a little pep to your step as you ease on down the road. Your hungry inner child (and the older person you’re becoming) will thank you the the wholesome, nutritious meals.

Bisselsign

As the pandemic disrupts global food supply chains, people may have to depend more on locally grown food. Experts expect the number of people suffering through severe food shortages could swell to 265 million people in 2020.
Bissel Gardeners are glad they have been community gardening and raising food for themselves for more than 25 years. We hope when the NYC Pause In Place is lifted more folks will see the need for community gardens and will join us! Chuck the Gardener

GARDEN TIP - When plants are about two feet tall, prune out the foliage from the bottom 12" of larger pepper varieties like bell, cubanelle, and poblano peppers. For smaller varieties such as jalapeno, shishito, and Thai peppers, remove foliage from the lower 6-8" of stems.Aug 11, 2022

Cream-style soups are a favorite for warm, soothing meals on cold winter nights. The addition of a cup or two of cooked beans can stretch canned or homemade soup into a complete, protein-rich meal in just minutes. Stir a can of drained rinsed white beans into tomato soup. Or try pinto beans added to cream of celery soup.
