Touch Your Toes Every Day

fit chick 4Damn! As we get older, we start to lose stuff. I don’t mean keys. I mean real, meaningful stuff like hair, eyesight, strength, flexibility, sexual interest. . . Oh my! But, yes, there is a but. Your really don’t have to lose as much as you think. Good habits aren’t enough. Those are what got you to where you are now. You need to cultivate great habits. You don’t have to spend a ton of money but making the right choices can make a difference. Sure, you can spend your money on vitamins and supplements but it may be more important to make certain you are eating a healthy, balanced diet. Some of you would rather die than put a vegetable in your mouth so you are willing to spend money on stuff like sea kelp tablets. You already know what I am going to say.

Beyond the metabolism things that happen as we age, we lose strength, fitness and flexibility. But just like having an aversion to green vegetables, many of us have an aversion to fitness. We practically break out in hives if we have to do anything more than carry groceries from the car. But just as we can eat better to supplement the vitamins and minerals our body’s need, we can reach and bend our way to greater flexibility. That certainly helps in assuming and holding that position you like.

So, after you empty your bladder, drink a glass of water and before you clutter your mind with the days requisites, touch your toes. I’m fond of going back to bed, so I pull up the covers, sit on the bed with my legs in front of me and reach down to touch my toes . . . and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat several times. Lay back and pull one knee up to your chest and hold. Then the other. Then both. Roll to your side and bring your leg across as far as you can. Repeat on both sides.

Sit on the edge of the bed and stretch your shoulders reaching up and then across. Twist at the waist and hold. Both sides. Bend over at the waist and try to get your torso on your thighs. Stand and squat as deeply as you can. Hold and repeat. Go take a shower, get some coffee or do whatever you do next. You’ll feel better, especially if you make it a habit. And if you can make it a daily habit, if you touch your toes every day, you will find that your holding off loosing stuff that is near and dear to you.
