Soundview Park – Creating Habitat – One Year Later

Soundview Park October 2014

Soundview Park Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration October 2014

Dear friends and colleagues,

I would like to invite you to a special volunteer event at the sixteen acre Soundview Park Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration. This event is presented in collaboration with iLAND (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art, Nature, and Dance) and Natural Areas volunteers (NAV) on June 25th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

This year we will focus on the salt marsh, talk about the services provided by the marsh and the challenges to coastal marshes in urban lands.  Then we will spend a few hours planting and repairing the restoration. This past winter was extremely hard on the new marsh, and the damage is severe in areas.

Included will be a wonderful opportunity to join Paloma McGregor, choreographer, who will help us experience the site through movement.

Parking is available in the neighborhood for those who have their own car. We have 12 seats available in one van that will be taking volunteers from El Museo Del Barrio (1234 Fifth Ave) to the site. We will meet at 9:15 am.

NAV will supply water (please bring an empty bottle), tools & gloves. NAV will supply some snacks, but participants are encouraged to bring lunch if they need a heartier meal.

For more details and direction to sign up visit http://www.ilandart.org/creating-habitat-one-year-later/

I hope to see you there. We will have a terrific time.

Soundview and the Devil’s Belt

Bronx River Ramble
SUNDAY, June 28th, 1PM
At the Friends of Soundview Park Festival
Lafayette and Metcalf Avenues

Join us for a special Bronx River Ramble in honor of the Friends of Soundview Park.

We’ll ramble down the Bronx River Greenway through Soundview Park and hear about the ecology, geology and Native American history of the Bronx River Estuary. We’ll enjoy spectacular views of Long Island Sound, hear dark tales of the waters once known to sailors as the “Devil’s Belt,” and see the unique river community of Harding Park. We’ll also learn about Soundview’s lost creeks and tidal marshes, see how Soundview became a landfill (with rubble from Brooklyn), check out the new salt marsh restoration and hear the strange tale of the “Moses Marina.” We’ll see where an oyster reef is being re-established, and pause for a cinematic moment by the spot where they “sank” the Titanic.

This free tour requires no reservations. We’ll meet at1PM at Lafayette and Metcalf Avenues – to get there take the #6 Subway to the Morrison Avenue/Soundview station and from there take the Clason Point bound Bx #27 bus to Lafayette and Rosedale Avenues, and walk west three blocks on Lafayette Avenue to the meeting point. Or take the Bx #5 bus to Morrison and Story Avenue, walk down a block and turn left when you reach Lafayette Avenue; walk through the park to Metcalf Avenue. We’ll end up at the #27 bus stop where you can catch the bus home. For information or directions call Stephen DeVillo at 646-271-8223.

About Community Greens

It takes more than a village to raise a child in today's world. The world is more than flat or round or sun and moon. It's also the village on the other side of the river. The objects in the sky are different from that view. Community Greens, griot-like, tells a story. I invite you to share my view.
