Bronx Park Speak Up Feb 24 2018

The Bronx Parks Speak Up is an annual community networking conference for park and environmental stakeholders. Organized by the Bronx Coalition for Parks and Green Spaces (BCPGS), this day-long event draws over 250 Bronx residents, elected officials and agency personnel. It gives its attendees the chance to learn about government and non-government resources and participate in face-to-face discussions with city and local elected and appointed officials.

The Bronx Ferry at Clason Point

I went to the Mayor’s Town Hall at Stevenson HS on May 24, 2017. Good turn out, good questions and, for the most part, good responses. I was disappointed the Mayor, Commissioners and other elected officials generally lacked knowledge or were unwilling to share information about the Ferry, which will BEGIN OPERATION JUNE 2018. There was no suggestion there was any plan to mitigate traffic, improve parking or amend/improve bus service in Clason Point. Elected officials were also unaware of the Shorehaven Condominiums’ proposed relationship and responsibilities to Clason Point Park ball field and waterfront esplanade. As a community, we need to get together and discuss this before unacceptable, last minute “solutions” are thrown on the table.

I have contacted the offices of several city and elected officials and have not received any responses. We will reach out to them again. If they continue to avoid and evade this interest in information regarding the Bronx Ferry we will move to the next level. We will identify who was willing to listen and help and who turned a deaf ear to community concerns.

Because of lack of information, we have established The Friends of Clason Point Park to protect our community. The FCPP will hold a meeting in the coming weeks. We will posts and circulate meeting notices. All community members are invited to attend.

Soundview Park – Creating Habitat – One Year Later

Soundview Park October 2014

Soundview Park Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration October 2014

Dear friends and colleagues,

I would like to invite you to a special volunteer event at the sixteen acre Soundview Park Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration. This event is presented in collaboration with iLAND (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art, Nature, and Dance) and Natural Areas volunteers (NAV) on June 25th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

This year we will focus on the salt marsh, talk about the services provided by the marsh and the challenges to coastal marshes in urban lands.  Then we will spend a few hours planting and repairing the restoration. This past winter was extremely hard on the new marsh, and the damage is severe in areas.

Included will be a wonderful opportunity to join Paloma McGregor, choreographer, who will help us experience the site through movement.

Parking is available in the neighborhood for those who have their own car. We have 12 seats available in one van that will be taking volunteers from El Museo Del Barrio (1234 Fifth Ave) to the site. We will meet at 9:15 am.

NAV will supply water (please bring an empty bottle), tools & gloves. NAV will supply some snacks, but participants are encouraged to bring lunch if they need a heartier meal.

For more details and direction to sign up visit http://www.ilandart.org/creating-habitat-one-year-later/

I hope to see you there. We will have a terrific time.

About Community Greens

It takes more than a village to raise a child in today's world. The world is more than flat or round or sun and moon. It's also the village on the other side of the river. The objects in the sky are different from that view. Community Greens, griot-like, tells a story. I invite you to share my view.

Green Tips!

Bee proactive!

A few things you can do to help keep bees healthy:

  • plant different flowers that bloom throughout the season for the bees;

    • native plants and other perennials

    • bloom colors of yellow, white,  blue, and purple

  • watch for neonicotinoid-free note on plant tags- some tags will claim that insecticides were used for ‘your plant’s health’ (but NOT for the bees!)

  • leave the blossoms until they expire

  • plant plants with fragrant flowers with a long bloom season

  • consider early blooming plants for bees that have had little nourishment over the winter
