NYRP Offers Free Gardening Education

NYRP

New York Restoration Project (NYRP) offers free, hands-on gardening education targeted to kindergarten through eighth grade students. All programs are taught in one of NYRP’s local community gardens. Choose between 1-6 sessions in which students learn how to tend to a garden and raise vegetables from seed to plate, while gaining valuable lessons in environmental science and stewardship.

If you’ve visited Community Green before you know I learned to garden as a kid at a local community garden. That exposure was invaluable, not to mention incredible and led to a life long love of green things. That’s nature nurture is especially important for city kids. If your program can take advantage of NYRP’s program, you certainly should.

Green Tips!

Bee proactive!

A few things you can do to help keep bees healthy:

  • plant different flowers that bloom throughout the season for the bees;

    • native plants and other perennials

    • bloom colors of yellow, white,  blue, and purple

  • watch for neonicotinoid-free note on plant tags- some tags will claim that insecticides were used for ‘your plant’s health’ (but NOT for the bees!)

  • leave the blossoms until they expire

  • plant plants with fragrant flowers with a long bloom season

  • consider early blooming plants for bees that have had little nourishment over the winter
